Encrypting your Emails

Remember in "Mission Impossible," after an agent listens to his secret mission, the recording goes on to mention "This message will self destruct…" followed by the oversized tape-recorder puffing out billows of smoke. Businesses have gone a long way since then (we've replaced sending tape-recorders with the much more efficient email), and encrypting email messages is easy and cost effective for businesses that want to ensure that certain messages are only seen by certain recipients.

Why would you want to encrypt your email?  These days, spammers will try anything and everything to trick and solicit people.  They can even appear to send messages from your account (even though they aren't).  If there's a lapse in your security, it's even possible for spammers to relay junk mail off of your exchange server to the world which of course will eventually get you blacklisted.

If your email address is sending people junk mail and you are always getting flagged as spam, your legit messages may get ignored or discarded as well.  More importantly, there may be times when you want to send an email out with secure, sensitive information that you don't want just anyone to see.  Unencrypted email can easily be intercepted and even altered.  Whether you are sending personal information, passwords, or sensitive company documents, you'll want to consider encrypting your email so you can control who has access to it. Email encryption is easy, and there are plenty of software solutions out there that let you digitally sign your email to prove that the message (and any attachments) actually came from you.  Most solutions these days are as simple as installing an outlook plugin and forgetting about it.  Don't wait until a hacker tries to impersonate your identity, use encrypted email to secure trust into your messages.
